Meet Aaron: Graduate Apprentice

Jun 20, 2025 | Careers

What’s it like being a 1st year trainee at Harold Sharp? This week our work experience student, Edward Otter, had the chance to pose his burning questions to ACA apprentice Aaron Phillips.

What drew you to accounting?

I originally went to university to study business finance and management but, after completing a module in accounting principles, I switched my degree to accountancy, as I really enjoyed it.

I knew I was interested in understanding how businesses worked – particularly how they managed their finances – and the course demonstrated that accountancy would enable me to do that.

What skills would you say you’ve gained from your apprenticeship?

Communication, for sure. In this line of work, you’re constantly collaborating with others. That’s exposed me to lots of different ideas from my peers and encouraged me to think more analytically, considering different perspectives as we tackle bigger projects.

I’ve also learned to manage my workload more effectively. There’s a lot of independence in this role, so I’m responsible for balancing work and study — and staying on top of both.

What sort of work are you involved in?

I’m currently on a six-month secondment in audit, where I review financial statements and check that the data is accurate. Before that, I was part of the Accounts and Outsourcing team, doing bookkeeping and preparing accounts for smaller companies.

What’s great about the apprenticeship is the variety – you get to try different areas and figure out what suits you best. Plus, the secondment lines up with my exams, so my current audit placement ties in perfectly with my upcoming Audit and FAR papers.

What has been most challenging?

As with any new job, getting to know a whole new team (and remembering everyone’s names!) was a challenge, especially when everyone already knew my name!

On top of that, applying the concepts I’m learning as part of my training to real-life client work has been more difficult than I expected. There’s definitely a learning curve when putting theory into practice.

What are your plans regarding accounting?

I haven’t thought too far beyond qualification – that’s my main short-term goal right now. I’m focused on working hard, staying disciplined and preparing well for my exams. I’m hoping that will pave the way for qualification and a successful career!
