Stamp Duty Land Tax

Stamp Duty is the tax you pay when you buy property or shares. Stamp Duty Land Tax, or SDLT, is payable when you buy a property. Either Stamp Duty or Stamp Duty Reserve Tax is payable, when you buy shares.

Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT)
If the purchase price of a property is £125,000 or less, you do not pay any SDLT at all; however, if the purchase price is greater than £125,000, you pay between 1% and 4% of the whole purchase price.

There are some exemptions, such as property purchased in areas designated gy the government as “disadvantaged”. We can advise on such exemptions.

Stamp Duty and Stamp Duty Reserve Tax
You pay Stamp Duty or Stamp Duty Reserve Tax at a rate of 0.5% when you buy shares.

• Stamp Duty is payable when the shares are transferred using a stock transfer form.
• Stamp Duty Reserve Tax is payable when the shares are transferred electronically without using a stock transfer form.

There are other special arrangements we can also advise on, where shares are held by a third party.
